  1. Suchdol on Odrou River, a municipality of 2.5 thousand inhabitants in Novy Jicin district, Slezsko-Moravsky Region in the Czech Republic and the town of Herrnhut will establish trilateral co-operation with a Polish partner, for implementation of cultural, sport, historical and educational projects, based particularly on the shared history.

  2. Memorandum of Understanding between Silesia and Slezsko-Moravsky Region - will be signed on 9 October 2001 - one of paragraphs of the agreement will consider support for local authorities in partnerships establishment.

  3. Alsozsolca - a Hungarian municipality with 6 thousand inhabitants (concrete production and metallurgy) from Borsod - Abauj - Zemplen is searching a partner - a municipality in the mountainous area near Bielsko-Biał.

  4. Exchange of experience related to job market in mining regions. Dortmund plans to set up a project on job market in mining regions with chosen self-governments. The project could be carried out together with Leeds in Great Britain, the twinning town of Dortmund. We have received the information from the Polish Embassy in Great Britain that there is no city in Poland that co-operates with Leeds. The willingness to establish similar co-operation concerning the effects of industrial restructuring in suburban areas has been declared by Unna District.

  5. RAG Bildung is organising training courses for the youth from craftsmanship classes in schools in Germany in 2002. The condition is a good command of German.

  6. Promotion of Silesia in Nordhine-Westfalia. Silesian cities and towns that have already partners can join the programme of regional promotion - starting in January 2002, end autumn 2003. The Government will facilitate the access to scenes reservation in cultural institutions.

LOCAL AUTHORITIES QUESTIONNAIRE

The Office of the Marshal of the Voivodeship distributes a questionnaire on International Co-operation of Silesia. The questionnaire includes information about international co-operation of local authorities, with official names of communes (gminas and poviats), contact persons and scope of co-operation; also the information about co-operation with Poles living abroad and plans of co-operation.

The information comprised in the inquiry will be helpful in setting the events of international co-operation and conducting partner search activities.

THE PSZCZYNA DISTRICT

The Pszczyna District includes such communes as half - municipal, half -rural Pszczyna and other five typically rural communes: Goczałkowice - Zdrój, Kobiór, Miedźna, Pawłowice, Suszec. There are 33 villages and one town in the District. The capital of the whole District, whose territory comprises 473 km2, is Pszczyna The Pszczyna District is inhabited by 103 thousant citizens while it's rural population is as large as 74%.

Farming, trade and services as well as mining industry play the most significant role in the District's economy. The numerous local farms are known for high-standard plant growing and animal raising. Horticulture, mushroom growing and processing are on very high level. The main crops are wheat, barley, potatoes and rape-seed. Small farms, of the average area of 4,5 ha, are dominant in the District as well as in the whole Silesian Province. Pig raising is characteristic for Pszczyna and it's surroundings.

The real pearl of the Pszczyna region is the Dukes' residence - since 1847 - a seat for the richest aristocratic family at the time - the Hochbergs and the hunting mansion in Kobiór-Promnice. The municipality's northern part is covered by Pszczyńskie Forest, the remains of a former primeval forest. The bison reserve in Jankowice is a real attraction, currently about thirty five bison live in this reserve within an area of 800 ha. The popular health resort Goczałkowice - Zdrój lies on Goczałkowickie Lake. Moreover, there is also an artificial lake on Pszczynka River, called the Łącki Reservoir. Local sanatoriums utilize reach deposits of therapeutic mud and brine which are useful for healing rheumatic diseases. The District is also rich in coal and natural gas. Taking in consideration the District's historic heritage, it's splendid monuments and picturesque landscape, architectural curiosities and holiday centres as well as recreational amenities - the municipality and many private businesses are doing their best to make tourism one of the municipality's main spheres of economy.

Great efforts are made to develop educational centres in the District of Pszczyna. It is well worth mentioning that there are two Dedactic Departments of the Politechnical High School in Crocow - the Department of Land Engineering Sciences (since 1998), whose seat is the Secondary School in Gilowice, and the Department of Environment Protection Engineering with its' seat in the Secondary Agricultural School in Pszczyna. In the Pszczyna District there are 8 groups of secondary schools.

The Pszczyna District's road as well as piping and telecomunication systems are very well developed. The sewerage and gas networks are being very intensily developed at the time. There are the communal sewege plants in the area.

Despite the District's agricultural character, the number of small and medium enterprises is gradually growing. There are 9000 economic entities registered in the area. The authorities representing both - the local communes and the whole District are trying to attract more investment into the industry of Miedźna, Pszczyna and Suszec. The Commune of Pawłowice is the member of Special Economic Area - Subarea of Jastrzębie - Żory while the territory of Miedźna Commune have been established as the Communal Special Economic Area.
