All types of schools educate a total of 798,498 children and young people, 13.8% of which are in pre-school education.

Primary schools educate 261,433 students, 32,7% of the total number, whereas junior secondary schools educate 164,292 students, i.e. 20.5%. The remaining 33% of children and young people attend various types of secondary and post-secondary schools and schools for adults.  

In the years 2007/2008, 731,100 people learned foreign languages in schools for children and young people, as well as in post-secondary schools in the Silesian Voivodeship. English remains the most popular foreign language (approx. 71% of the total number of learners in the region), followed by German (approx. 22.6%), French (3.5%) and Russian (2%).

The Silesian Voivodeship is home to 46 higher schools, including 1 university, 4 higher schools of technology, 14 higher schools of economics, 2 higher schools of pedagogy, 1 medical academy, and 16 higher vocational schools. In total, the Silesian higher schools educate 197,761 people, which accounts for 10.3% of the total number of students in Poland. The number of graduates in the 2007/2008 academic year amounted to 44,816, which accounted for 10.6% of all graduates in Poland in the reference period. The greatest proportion is that of graduates from higher schools of economics (32% of the total number of graduates in the region), higher schools of technology (24%), and the University of Silesia (18%). The number of university teachers was 9,781.
